Return

After watching The World Is Not Enough, I wanted to see more of Sophie Marceau, so I rented a French film called The Revenge of the Musketeers. (It was in the Blockbuster new release section, although it was apparently produced in 1995.) I'd recommend it to fans of the swashbuckler genre if you don't mind subtitles.

It has great scenery--both landscape and human--and just the right degree of tongue-in-cheek humor regarding its subject while maintaining proper respect. The plot is Louix XIV is just about to rise to the throne and the usual court intrigue is afoot (though much of the humor relies on the excess of intrigue). The musketeers are now old and a little the worse for their years of fencing, storming castles, and enjoying life's pleasures. I found this to be one of the more likeable elements of the film as it wasn't overdone but added a certain human graininess to their heroics.

Marceau is D'Artenagn's daughter and turns in a meatier performance of a similar role to Catherine Zeta-Jones in Zorro. As a matter of fact, I'd use the latter picture in judging whether you'd like Musketeers: it's a tad less frolicking but weightier than Zorro and set in France rather than Mexico, but if you liked one my bet is you'll like the other.
