Mission to Mars: Not quite interminable, like "Contact" was interminable, but every bit as dewy-eyed, hokey and new age. Gary Sinise looks too much like an angry rat to play a lead. The soundtrack - oftentimes nothing more than a creepy organ that you might hear in an Asbury Park spook house - made me snicker during dramatic moments. The other leads - Tim Robbins, Don Cheadle, and Connie Nielson - appeared to have had the personality sucked from their marrow. Though it is 2020, and NASA (or some world federation facsimile of same) now allows husbands and wives to go on space missions together (Robbins and Nielson are married) the policy has a negative effect on the viewer (Robbins and Nielson nuzzle in weightlessness and otherwise crack cute) and the crew (when Robbins is endangered, Nielson wilts like a weeper and threatens the mission when her emotions overcome her judgment). And there are meaningful answers "out there" for all of us.
