Return

I saw Smoke Signals yesterday (playing an exclusive engagement in Dallas). Has anyone reviewed it on the fray? It is the story of two Coeur d'Alene Indians who leave the reservation for a week to retrieve the ashes of one of the young man's father. The movie was written, directed, acted and produced by Indians. It's very funny, and the characters are all charmingly appealing. Adam Beach plays the son, with his "side-kick" played by Evan Adams, who is in medical school IRL. The film reflects the poverty, alcoholism and joblessness of the reservation as a fact of life, but the characters all have warmth and personality.

I really enjoyed this movie.

There was no sex, and no profanity, that I can remember. Two violent scenes: one of drunken domestic violence, and another of a conflagration.

If you're not up for Armageddon, Deep Impact, Six Days/Seven Nights, Godzilla and the rest of the summer fare, you might give this one a try!
