Return

If you liked "Buena Vista Social Club" you might also enjoy "Genghis Blues" a documentary about Paul Pena's visit to Tuva and his performance at a traditional throat-singing contest. Quite emotional and interesting to see how love of music can bridge distant "worlds."

Being blind, Paul Pena has made a hobby of listening to short wave broadcasts from around the world. He first heard throat-singing while tuning into a broadcast from Russia. Evidently there are two or three styles. Some are in the higher registers while others are lower, but they all have in common the practice of singing more than one note simultaneously. Paul actually learned much of the Tuvan language and picked up on subtle intonations in their traditional songs, so that he could actually them perform to a serious standard. He also is a significant blues artist and he shared the blues with the Tuvans. The whole story is quite remarkable.
