I rented Opposite of Sex last night. I quite
enjoyed the film, despite the fact that I loathed the director's
last screenplay for Boys on the Side (the one film in history I
would have walked out on if I could have). The film has some
phenomenally funny dialogue and narration, shows that Martin
Donovan exists outside of Hal Hartley films, shows Lisa Kudrow
can actually play a character other than a complete ditz, and
shows that Christina Ricci is fulfilling her promise as a child
actor. The underlying story is pretty damned slight, if you give
it too much attention, and its attempts at a theme fall
completely flat, but it is worth seeing just to listen.
