LAst one I saw in the theater was Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
And I thought that the two title characters did outstanding jobs
(I admit I had misgivings about Depp as HST, not that he can't
act but I thought he was miscast). I went in thinking that 'well,
the performances might not be any good but the movie itself might
make up for it' and I left thinking the opposite. I felt that
Gilliam's direction was an almost total loss, except for some of
the more interesting scenes (and I don't mean the hallucinations
or such, which I thought were over the top). The movie turned out
to be less of the smooth HST trip with everything tying in
despite the fact that it's one mad ramble, and more of a jerky
vignette of two guys trashing hotel rooms and becoming that which
they fear and loathe. And I thought undue attention was paid to
Vietnam -- instead of setting the social context for the two
characters, it seemed to detract from it.
