Incidentally, I saw High Fidelity the other night. I had been up for 38 hours and had just finished an exam, so my recollection isn't entirely clear. It starts slowly and the plot (basically John Cusack trying to reconcile himself with past and ongoing romantic failures) didn't seem to justify its two hour length. There is a lot of Cusack talking to the screen, and the pacing is erratic and quirky. Still, the movie builds confidence in itself and its material as it goes along. The odd pacing pays off about 40 minutes in by (somehow) making incredibly low key jokes come off as bust a gut funny. I recommend it quite highly.
Of course, I was a little giddy going in. I broke up laughing while preparing for my exam, when reading a case and coming across a sentence like: so and so, was trying to register CHUBBY as a trademark for his product. So, my perspective on the movie might have been skewed towards laughing at any dumb ass thing on the screen. Buyer Beware.
