Return

'Caught "Unbreakable" last night.

The critics had already trashed it but I wanted to see for myself. And I wanted to like the movie.

Well, it certainly doesn't have the bite of "Sixth Sense". The critics I've read are, essentially right, and the "surprise ending" is pretty cheesy.

Still, I enjoyed 80% of the thing simply because it was so well-assembled. Good performances, lots of atmosphere, excellent cinematography, music, etc., and direction that caused you to care about what happened to the characters and to lose yourself in the unfolding drama.

But to me, at least, it ended up as a big letdown. Essentially, a first-class production of a third-rate script.

For those who have seen it or will see it, let me suggest a question: (I don't really regard this as a SPOILER, but possibly you might, so if such stuff worries you, STOP HERE.)

There is a scene, late in the film at a kitchen table, involving a newspaper and an exchange between father and son. ...Wouldn't this have been a better movie if it had just ended at that scene?
