Saw an interesting little Iranian movie directed by a 17 year old girl, Samira Makhmalbaf, whose father is a big time film director in Iran. The movie is a documentary about a family with two teenage girls who were kept prisoner in their house by their blind mother and uneducated, fundamentalist Muslim father who feared that his daughters would be tampered with by neighborhood boys if they were allowed outside the house. The movie was filmed in eleven days right after the case was publicized in the newspapers with the family and neighbors and social worker assigned to the case playing themselves. The movie depicts the plight of the girls and how they interact with the world after the social worker forces the parents to allow them to leave the house. The movie is well done and provides a fascinating glimpse into contemporary Iran, which apparently has a thriving film industry specializing in films about children.
