You Can Count on Me is a much better and more serious movie about disfunctional life in a small town in upstate New York. Not as wild as American Beauty but telling, nevertheless. Very well done, a real grabber. Wonderful acting by all and masterful directing by Ken Lonergan who I believe wrote the script also??

I thought the priest was well portrayed by Lonergan, but it seems to me that the movie was poking a bit of fun at his efforts to take a "modern" non-traditional approach (as contrasted with the Mayor in Chocolat). As far is Broderick's character not being uni-dimensional, I guess you are right. At least he didn't hesitate to jump in the sack with Laura Linney at the first opportunity. That was mildly surprising to me after his ridiculously rigid behavior as bank manager. The movie didn't seem to get into his head as much as it did with the other characters. His wife did seem to be a bit of a sour apple which I guess may have motivated him to respond so quickly to Laura's overture.
