Subject: Need .css file for examples to work Wk 5
Author:    Instructor Team

Ghatten wrote this up as an addendum the Week 5 Introduction to Cascading Style Sheets. People were having trouble getting the link colors and effects to show when they tried saving the 3 example files posted with the lesson. This tells how to find and save the needed ^example.css which some might have missed that is also needed.
Special Info When Working With Linked Style Sheets
It is important to remember when using or when viewing web pages with a Linked Style Sheet, that the actual instructions for the style changes is not a part of the web page itself, but rather contained in a separate file. In order to view these instructions, or to copy the instructions to review them, you will need to look at the source of the HTML document first and locate the LINK tag: <LINK REL="stylesheet" TYPE="text/css" HREF="nameofsheet.css">

The HREF= is the name and location of the actual FILE in the directory which is causing the changes. You can view it or save it by typing the name of the style sheet in the browser window in place of the name of the HTML file. (If the .css file is in a different directory, you will need to type the entire directory or perhaps the entire URL to access it. Most often it will be in the same directory.) You should then be able to see the "source" of the .css or the style instructions.

Example: By looking at the source of the "linked" example file for the lesson,
http://www.vu.org/desk/83/linked.html
we see the LINK tag in the HEAD of the document which says:
<LINK REL=stylesheet TYPE="text/css" HREF="^example.css">

So we now know that there is a file called ^example.css containing the instructions for the Styles on the HTML page "linked.html".

If we then type in:
http://www.vu.org/desk/83/^example.css --- the contents of the ^example.css file used in the examples for Lesson 5 becomes available to view! It can then be saved to your computer, like any other file. When you want to open it you will need to use Notepad to view it.

Remember a linked .css file and the html file work together. Much like when you want to use an image on a web page, you need to have the image uploaded and linked properly into your HTML document to see the image on your page, you will need to make sure the .css file is properly linked and uploaded in order for the Style Sheet to have an effect on the page! If you forget to upload the .css file or if the link is not written properly, it will not work. Unfortunately, it will not show you a "missing .css" icon, it simply will not display the Styles you specified.

Due to changes in the CEU requirements, letter based grades are no longer required. In light of that, students will be assigned a grade of
"Exemplary", "Complete", or "Incomplete", based on the following ...
"Exemplary"
Anyone who turns in all portions *AND* has 90 points or higher based on the posted exam requirements.
"Complete"
Anyone who turns in all portions *AND* has at least 70 points based on the posted exam requirements.
"Incomplete"
Only those who don't meet the requirements and/or has LESS than 70 points based on the posted exam requirements.

For HTML II From Ghatten: Please note especially this expanded explanation of what should be included in your Gallery Pages!

Part 1 (30 points total) URL for your completed Gallery Pages with demonstrations of each of the items covered in class and/or links to where you have demonstrated the ability. If your Gallery pages contain an example of any FIVE or more of the topics we covered in class, Full 30 points. Any FOUR 20 points. Any THREE 10 Points. Any TWO or fewer, no points. The examples in your gallery should be from these areas, at least one example per topic: Frames, Image Maps, Forms, Java, JavaScript, Cascading Style Sheets.

They offer all kinds of things for free (message boards, guest books, counters, etc) and give easy and complete instructions for setting them up on your web site.

Working tables tip:

Even if you do not wish the end results of your table to show a border, when you are working to create the table, it will be easier to see your results and troubleshoot if you use set a border to 1 or 2 so that you can see the individual cells.

TABLE BORDER="1"
When you are finished, then you can take off the border so that it will not show.

Have you right clicked on your start button lately? Not just on start but elsewhere?

The missing image for the roll over example AND the corrected version of the clock code should be posted soon!

In the lesson the example tag is incorrect...it should read:

Thanks for your patience and congratulations to those who caught the problem!
