Search Engines: General

General Search Engines are programs which utilize robots and spiders to search, catalog and organize information on the Internet. When you do a "search" you are actually asking the Search Engine to look in its database for information it already has stored. The very best Search Engines have several robots and spiders working parallel to gather information all the time.

Search Engines: Meta

Meta Search Engines are actually Search Engines which present arguments to many different general search engines for you. You only type what you are looking for once and the Meta Search Engine literally contacts the other search engines and presents you with a list of what each of the individual search engines report. The drawback of using a Meta Search Engine is the limitation of how the search argument is presented. Sometimes it is better to go directly to the General Search Engines to get more appropriate hits. Search Engines: Directory

Directory Search Engines, sometimes known as Search Engine Guides, categorizes the information its robots and spiders find. Most of these Directory or Guide Search Engines do not allow you to do an actual search. They instead list different areas of interest and have sub-categories below those to narrow down the possible areas of interest for you. Only in the past year do some of these Directory Search Engines allow you to present your own search arguments, using another search engine to do the work while the Directory Search Engine reports the results.

Search Engines: Specialty

Specialty Search Engines typically look for information in specialized areas. The number of legal, medical, educational, etc. type sites is staggering so it makes sense to develop search engines which only target these types of sites.

Search Engines: Kids

This one speaks for itself!

    Homework and Discussion

Below are some exercises using Search Engines. Please post your questions and answers for the questions below in the Class Bulletin Board (Message) area.

    1. Choose 3 Search Engines that you liked and plan to use regularly (from the list in Lesson One). Explain what you like about these three search engines in particular? Describe at least two or three features which you found helpful.

    2. From the list of Search Engines in Lesson One, list one or two search engines that did you NOT like and explain what you didn't like about them. Please be specific.

    3. Using the three search engines that you liked most, what commands or arguments would you use to find:

      • Free Food related items
      • Free Arts and Crafts items
      • Free Educational Materials

      Example:

Search for: Free Pet related items

      Possible arguments:

      1. free AND pet AND food
      2. free AND pet AND food NOT dog
      3. free AND cat AND food

Most of these links are to online versions of printed magazines.
