Star Office 5.0 for Linux Installation
Notes: I am using Red Hat Linux 5.2 (Kernel 2.0.36).
Star Office is a Office Suite that included Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Database, Drawing and HTML Editor, all-in-one suite. Best of all, you can obtain a non-commercial use license for free.
for download, information & licenses, please visit their web site: www.stardivision.com
Installation
After the registration, we will get a personal key #, and ready for download. The file is big, a 66MB file called "so50_01.tar"
untar the file by the following command:
mv so50_01.tar /tmp
cd /tmp
tar x so50_01.tar
after uncompress the file, you should have 3 directories and 1 file
|\__tmp
|
| \__glibc2_inst
'glibc2 2.0.7 installation files
| \__office50_inst
'star office 5.0 installation files
| \__so50_doc
'star office 5.0 setup files in PDF format
|README_01
*make sure take a look the file "README_01", it contain some incompatible issue for the other distributions. if you have the distributions other than Red Hat 5.1/5.2 or Debian 2.0, you need to install glibc2 2.0.7!
After we have the installation files ready and make sure glibc2 version is compatible, we can go to X-Windows for the Installation.
startx
start X-terminal, and type:
cd /tmp/office50_inst
./setup
the Star Office Installation screen
shows up, and follow the instructions, fill in your personal key #.
after the installation finish, we are ready to use Star Office.
at X-terminal, type:
cd /opt/Office50/bin
./soffice
after awhile (for some reason, it start up slow!), you should see Star Office integrated desktop.
Enjoy!
