Sony CD-RW Digital Camera.

Sony has announced it will put its CD-R/RW digital camera on the market next month. The camera is called the CD Mavica and uses an eight centimetre CD, capable of holding 150Mb worth of images. There will be two models - the MVC-CD300 and the CD200. In addition to storing about 800 snapshots the cameras can also record small action clips. You can store 15 seconds worth of hi-quality footage, 60 seconds on medium quality or 240 seconds at web clip ready quality. Battery life will be about 75 minutes according to Sony

IBM Breakthrough.

IBM scientists have built the first array of transistors out of carbon nanotubes -- tiny cylindrical structures of carbon atoms that are some 50,000 times thinner than the diameter of a human hair, technology that could someday enable a new class of much smaller and faster computer chips. Carbon nanotubes are the strongest fiber in all of nature, taking advantage of the carbon bond -- which is what makes a diamond so hard. Such new materials and processes are important because chipmakers expect that at some point, within the next decade or two, silicon-based chips cannot be made any smaller.

Intel's Pentium 4, aka Willamette, will debut just in time for the holidays. The 0.18 micron IA-32 based 32 bit microprocessor will first appear as a 1.4GHz part, with a speed upgrade to 1.5GHz before the end of the year. The Pentium 4 will have a 400MHz bus, employ 128 bit (SSE2) rather than the current 64 bit SSE of PentiumIII. According to senior Intel VP Albert Yu, Pentium 4's "NetBurst" feature will improve how computers handle tasks such as data encryption and video compression. Intel also demoed a Pentium 4 running at an amazing 2GHz.

Intel Issues Major Motherboard Recall.

Intel has found some boards using the MTH (memory translator hub) may be sensitive to system noise under extreme conditions, and this issue may manifest itself in intermittent system reboots or system hangs during operation. This noise sensitivity may result in data loss and/or corruption. Intel has therefore placed motherboards based on the i820 chipset(incl ASUS P3C-2000 and CUC2000 series)on shipment hold and recalled those already sold for replacement.

Ultra fast data transfers.

The device known as an electro-optic modulator, converts electrical signals into pulses of light which can then be transmitted down a fibre-optic cable. The Opti Chip is capable of converting signals at a rate of 100GB per second at very low voltages, according to researcher's at Universities of Washington and Southern Carolina. "We'll be able to take telephone signals, computer data, TV signals - any type of signal you can think of - put it on fibre-optic, route it around the world with almost no optical signal loss, and accomplish this with infinite bandwidth,'' according to research lead Larry Dalton.

AMD Demonstrates 1.1GHz ATHLON processor!

AMD demonstrated a 1.1 GHz(1100 MHz) version of the AMD Athlon processor manufactured in its Fab 30 facility in Dresden, Germany on February 7. The CPU is manufactured utilizing AMD's leading-edge 0.18 micron process technology featuring copper interconnects."We continue to aggressively advance the technologies that enable future AMD processors to deliver superior performance levels" said Larry Hollatz, group vice president of Computation Products at AMD. It's also amazing that the demonstration required no special cooling techniques, therefore with a little overclocking (and luck)one can only imagine the possibilities!

Scientists creates "DNA computer".

The short-lived chemical computer began by arranging the synthetic DNA's genetic coding -- represented by the letters A, T, C and G -- in different combinations that represented the numerical solutions to a problem. Those DNA strands were fastened to a piece of glass covered with a thin sheet of gold, then bathed repeatedly in different solutions of enzymes that interacted with the DNA to weed out the wrong answers according to University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers.

Outrageous price for memory.

Recently the price of memory has surged way pass what most people consider reasonable, whether this is just age old greed or a legitimate suppy and demand problem remains to be seen. However prices have doubled and none of the major manufacturers have offered any explanation for the hikes.Hopefully prices will fall before y2k rolls in, otherwise we might not be too happy installing Windows 2000 which despite what others might suggest should really be installed with at least 128 megs for best performance.

Next generation 3D accelerators.

Amazing the relatively short turnaround period that the major graphics chip manufacturers churn out faster and faster chipset. This holiday we will see the introduction of three major graphics accelerators.Nvidia has the Geforce256, which uses an internal 256bit data path with onboard T&L unit(transform and lighting) this would normally be done by the cpu, however with this hardware process implemented in the graphics chipset and supported by Dx7 the cpu cycles are freed up for more important task; in short this feature will bring exceptionally beautiful and very crisp looking levels to future games without the need for the most expensive cpu.S3 will be introducing their Savage2000 which will have very high fill rates somewhere in the region of 700Mtexels/s in addition to an onboard T&L unit. Both those products are outstanding in terms of their specs and features but most everyone(competition included)will tell you that they are anticipating 3dfx's next generation voodoo to have some huge performance figures when it's finally released. All three products will be faster than anything this side of the universe and they are not gonna be cheap: certainly for performance tweakers like myself the extreme performance justifies the price but for more everyday computer users or the occasional gamer its probably better to get whats top notch today at reduced price when the newer products are released. Go hereGeForce256 and Savage2000 for the specs.
