The Phoenix Arises - Viable Alternatives to the Microsoft Platform

A publication by Gavin Gregor Young. E-mail | Return to Home Page!

The purpose of this publication is to direct attention to viable alternatives to operating systems made by Microsoft. It was once felt that all hopes for such alternatives had died. Now such hopes have been revived and are arising like the phoenix. For example: Java and internet set top boxes are gaining popularity; Apple Computer is rapidly gaining marketshare and has released Mac OS X Server; Linux sales are growing rapidly; many Unix vendors have added Linux support to their Unix brands and are working towards standardizing Unix; Dell, Compaq and other leading PC makers are now shipping Linux on some of their PCs; Amiga, Inc. has been reborn and Amiga has released Amiga OS 3.5 and 3.9 (3.9 was released in December 2000). Times haven't been more encouraging for people frustrated with being forced to own a Microsoft operating system (such as myself).

If you appreciate the goals of this web site, are against Microsoft's dominance of the computing industry, and/or have encouraging information about alternatives to Microsoft products, please send e-mail to the above link. These articles are written from the perspective of someone who owns an AMD based PC and is looking for alternatives to Microsoft products. I also own an Amiga 1200 and a Power Macintosh.

Prior to July 29, 1999, this publication was known as "The Phoenix Arises - News Analysis of Apple Computer." Prior to November 2, 1997, this publication was known as "PowerPC Platform/Common Hardware Reference Platform (PPCP/CHRP) News Analysis - Your Source for Hard to Find News Analysis Regarding CHRP, Apple Computer and its Licensees, Mac OS, NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP, Rhapsody, BeOS, AIX, Solaris for PowerPC, and WindowsNT 4.0 for PowerPC."
