  • Hangul & Computer has terminated an agreement with Microsoft that would have seen the South Korean word processing software vendor abandon its own product development efforts in exchange for a cash injection from the U.S. vendor, a spokesperson at the company confirmed Monday
  • "Microsoft recently released a new product called the Windows Media Player that, in many cases, breaks RealNetworks' products," said RealNetworks Chief Executive Officer Rob Glaser at the Senate. After installing Microsoft's new Windows Media Player version 5.2 on a PC that was already running the latest version of RealNetworks' player Glaser showed how accessing RealAudio and RealVideo clips generated cryptic error messages--clips that had played back just fine using RealNetworks' player before.

It is the opposite. It is the end of innovation. Bill made the Internet browser a part of Windows as a blatant attempt to destroy the Internet innovator Netscape. ... Bill plans to keep using this 'just add it to Windows' strategy to extend his monopoly into dozens of other software areas. ... Microsoft is already the most powerful company on earth. But you ain't seen nothing yet."

  • Former Acer Employee Says Company Feared Microsoft :Acer computer lived in such fear of Microsoft that it chose to skip better software bargains in favor of Microsoft products, a former Acer employee told Reuters news agency today. Acer forego Corel, Lotus, and IBM because it did not want to anger Microsoft and Bill Gates, former Acer product manager Ricardo Correa told Reuters news service. "If Microsoft does not give us information we are basically paralyzed,'' said Correa. "So, if by accident they happen to forget to give us a bug report, or they forget to give us a software update, or they forget to include us in a training session, that would definitely hurt the business." Acer said Correa's comments were inaccurate. Microsoft called his statements "misleading."
