- Hangul & Computer has
terminated an agreement with Microsoft that would
have seen the South Korean word processing
software vendor abandon its own product
development efforts in exchange for a cash
injection from the U.S. vendor, a spokesperson at
the company confirmed Monday
"Microsoft
recently released a new product called the
Windows Media Player that, in many cases, breaks
RealNetworks' products," said RealNetworks
Chief Executive Officer Rob Glaser at the Senate. After installing Microsoft's
new Windows Media Player version 5.2 on a PC that
was already running the latest version of
RealNetworks' player Glaser showed how accessing
RealAudio and RealVideo clips generated cryptic
error messages--clips that had played back just
fine using RealNetworks' player before.
"If an innovative piece of
software comes along, Microsoft copies it and
makes it a part of Windows," said Oracle
Chief Executive Officer Larry Ellison, who
testified after Glaser."Bill calls this
innovation. It is the opposite. It is the end of
innovation. Bill made the Internet browser a part
of Windows as a blatant attempt to destroy the
Internet innovator Netscape. ... Bill plans to
keep using this 'just add it to Windows' strategy
to extend his monopoly into dozens of other
software areas. ... Microsoft is already the most
powerful company on earth. But you ain't seen
nothing yet."
- Former Acer Employee Says Company
Feared Microsoft :Acer computer lived in such
fear of Microsoft that it chose to skip
better software bargains in favor of Microsoft
products, a former Acer employee told Reuters
news agency today. Acer forego Corel,
Lotus,
and IBM
because it did not want to anger Microsoft and
Bill Gates, former Acer product manager Ricardo
Correa told Reuters news service. "If
Microsoft does not give us information we are
basically paralyzed,'' said Correa. "So, if
by accident they happen to forget to give us a
bug report, or they forget to give us a software
update, or they forget to include us in a
training session, that would definitely hurt the
business." Acer said Correa's comments were
inaccurate. Microsoft called his statements
"misleading."
