A while ago I had been cruising freeware sites and downloading stuff, and after an hour or two, things started happening.. Bad things, and I kept crashing and locking up, then the CD-ROM wasn't being recognized, it was telling me to insert Windows disk, and after doing so I only got 'Fatal error's'. So then, after dozens of resets...... Nothing! it would'nt boot up even. "Wanderer" would'nt come to life via floppy either, therefore I could'nt use an emergency disk, because it was in permanent search mode for my CD-ROM. I needed to change my boot sequence.

Like your own computer likely, mine boots up CD-ROM first, then floppy, then SCSI.. I needed to boot from Floppy first then the others, they didn't matter for now, I just needed access! To change the boot sequence you need to go into BIOS, and
it's password is different than your Windows password! I KNOW what mine was, I had it written down even, and besides... I only have one Dad! But I couldnt get in. I'd already resigned myself to the knowledge that I MUST have lost everything. I couldn't take it to the retailer, this all happened on a long weekend.

Finally, I remembered  that if one cannot get into BIOS to reset things, You have to resort to an old fashioned hacking method.... In essence I had to physically hack my own motherboard. To see what I had to do in order to gain access,

Two men and a woman had endured many weeks of testing to complete their application to the CIA.... For the final test, the CIA agents took one of the men to a large metal door and handed him a gun....."We must know that you will follow your instructions, no matter what the circumstances. Inside this room, you will find your wife, Kill her!" The man said, "you can't be serious. I could never shoot my wife!" The agent said, "Then you're not the man for this job." The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and went into the room. All was quiet for about five minutes.... Then the man came out with tears in his eyes. " I tried, but I can't kill my wife." The agent said, "You don't have what it takes. Take your wife and go home." Finally it was the womans turn. She was given the same instructions, to kill her husband. She took the gun and went into the room.... Shots were heard, one after another. They heard screaming, crashing, and banging on the walls. After a few minutes, all went quiet... The door slowly opened and there stood the woman. She wiped the sweat from her brow, and said, "This gun is loaded with blanks.....! I had to beat him to death with the chair!"
PERFORMANCE TIP.
Did your home computer come with Windows95/98 pre-installed? If so, you likely have a typical installation, which is Microsoft's default. They figured out what you are likely to use and what you wouldn't! And called it a typical install. Consequently, there are more than 32 components that are missing from the full version, some of which you are sure to like. And you likely have some components installed that you never use, just sat there taking up valuable disk space. For example: Are you a home desktop user with one computer?  It's estimated that if you were to disable networking you would lower your chances of being hacked by like 80%. Do you need it? No, not unless you actually network or netmeet! If not, it's just a wide open portal leaving you unneccesarily at risk. (Next weeks issue will deal with customizing Windows).

And all those programs and components you don't use? They're just sucking up space and slowing you down, you may as well dump 'em.!
Heres how to do it and regain some of that lost performance. We'll do some major deleteing, cleaning and defrag'.
Wait till you see the difference! A word of warning....... Whenever you're removing programs and it asks you if you want to keep shared files, ALWAYS opt to keep them, (you will likely have to click on the 'No' button to keep the file you already have, read it with care.) or you'll most likely find something else not working right.

QUICK TIPS.
Do you want to MAXIMIZE your screen space? You won't get much more than this, and still have functionability. I stumbled on this little trick a while back. At the bottom of your screen right now do you see your task bar? If so do this: click Start, settings, Taskbar & Start menu, then check 'Auto hide', and also, 'show small icons in start menu'. Hit apply, then ok, then restart your computer to keep the change. Now just move your cursor to the bottom of the screen and your taskbar pops up, move your cursor over the top line of the taskbar and you'll see it turn to an up/down arrow, now left click and drag it all the way up, it'll go halfway up the page. Now right click on a clear part of the taskbar then click toolbars, Click on Links, address, Desktop and Quick launch all in turn. Finally, go to top of Explorer screen and click on Full screen. Now look at the space you have!.......... And for even a litle bit extra, you see that small bar at the top of your screen that you're left with? right click an empty space there and click 'Auto Hide', now just move your cursor to the top of the screen to bring it down... just as in the bottom bar configured this way.
