Comment on sonicX at the SonicX Messageboard

Background to Sonic X-treme

In the year of 1991, Sega Enterprises , A Japanese company, released a game that revolutionized the Video game market. The game, Sonic the hedgehog, featured a spiny rodent usually found as roadkill in European highways as the main character. Now I am the first to admit that this is hardly the most exciting of ideas, but the game was so fast that such poor story construction didn't matter. The speed of this game was at least 3 times as fast as any other platformer known. The gameplay that this allowed meant that the game was, at the time, seriously amazing. This revolutionary game was ultimately very successful, and it led to many sequels.

However, since Sonic and Knuckles, there have been no more mainstream 2d sonic games except for the recent gameboy creations. But I want to play more sonic levels in a decent resolution. With this in mind I created SonicX so that it would be possible to download levels off the internet. There are some levels included in the main package, but many more are available on this site. To aid level development, I have also included an easy to use level editor, and a graphics editor with the game. I have done this so that you guys can make your own levels and post them on to this website. If you decide to make a level, please send it in via my email @ prodigy22k@yahoo.com.au. It's the people who download and upload levels that will ultimately keep the sonic style of game alive.

How do I make levels ?

You can make levels with the program "leveled.exe" which is included in the sonicX package. Leveled can be thought of as the level editor. It allows you to design and create a sonic world. The sonic world is made up of graphics created using "Graphics.exe". This graphics editor lets you create a graphics file (*.tex) that the level editor can recognise.

If you want to design your own level, read this excellent tutorial, and you will be making sonic worlds like a professional in next to no time.

Where do I send levels so that they can be included on your levels page, where they can be downloaded by other people?

Once you have made a level, send the files with the '.tex' extension, the '.lvl' file extension and the midi file (if there is one) in an email adressed to JB at prodigy22k@yahoo.com.au. Please use a zip file, if you know what these are. The level will usually be uploaded the next time the website updates.
