LHA

compress files for storage and internet

LHA, 64Kb

LHA is Japanese compression utility that is widely used in that country. With it you can:

1) save space on your hard disk by compressing files you don't access often.
2) save space on your backups, by compressing the archives.
3) save time transmitting files over networks like the internet, as smaller files take less time to transmit.
4) make self-extracting files, so you can distribute compressed files to people who don't have LHA

The two big questions asked of any compression utility are how much does it compress files and how fast does it do it? Despite being a freebie, LHA's compression ratios and compression speed are basically the same as the widely used commercial product, PKZIP.

LHA is a DOS program that runs from the command line, but the way you specify the command line seems reversed to me.

Personally I use LHA to compress files that I use don't use much, but want to keep on my hard disk. I think it much better than using DOS 6's Double Space at saving disk space: there have been reports of data loss and instability with Double Space. Besides, if you compress your disk, many disk utilities are incompatible with it.
