A zip file is a collection of one or more files of any type that have been shrunk in size (compressed), and put into a single file "package" (an archive). Many of the files here and at other software download sites are available as a zip file. The files must be reseparated and restored to their original size (expanded) before they can be used, and you need a tool to do this.
Stuff-It Expander is a quick to install and very easy to use tool to expand zip files. You just download the installation program, run it on your computer, and Stuff Expander will install itself. There is one dialog of options, just accept all the defaults. Now you can expand zip files simply by double clicking on them in File Manager.

That's all you need to know to unzip files, you can skip the rest of this review, if you want. For those of you who want to tweak with StuffIt Expander and do some more advanced unzipping, here's some more info. StuffIt Expander will expand zip, arj, gzip, uuencode, and BinHex files, does drag and drop unzipping from File Manager, and can examine and expand individual files in an archive. Lots of options are available if you don't like the default settings. For example, you can opt to delete the zip file after expanding, and control to which directory you expand to. Being originally a Macintosh program, it's no surprise that there are features to manage cross platform zip files, like adjusting the end of line character differences between Mac and Windows. A thorough help file is included to guide you through the program.

StuffIt Expander is a well thought out program that was designed to be easy to use and understand, just like the computer that inspired it.
