You can make zip files without paying the shareware fee for WinZip with WiZ from Info-Zip. This program can do it all with zip files. You can zip and unzip with lots of options, like the directory information option (so when unzipped, directories are created and the files in them) and the self-extracting file option (creates a compressed file that unzips itself when you run it). WiZ can remove stuff, update stuff, and add comments to zip files. You can test the integrity of archives too. It's all here and more.
Just remember that to unzip files with WiZ, you must open the file first inside WiZ. Then you select the files to unzip and tell WiZ to unzip them. Select all the files to unzip the entire archive (there's a button to do this with a single click).
WiZ requires some time to get comfortable with but that is inevitable in a program with this kind of power. The help file is well organized and quite understandable. The installation instructions are contained in this help file, so start there. Just remember to put the download file in its own directory before running it.
