Jimi Hendrix drawn by Chris Sims 1979This is a picture I drew when I was at High School (in Art class over two separate lesson periods). My teacher was Maria McNulty (nee Macaronis) and she was one of my favourite teachers (Art was one of my favourite subjects) at Mt Morgan State High School in Central Queensland, Australia. I had a large poster of Jimi Hendrix which I used as my "model" to draw this pencil sketch. Fortunately, I had made a photocopy of the original sketch (although in those days photocopies were on shiny paper much like that of some faxes still today) because the original sketch and the large poster I owned have long since disappeared from my life (probably thrown out when my parents moved after I left home). Some time later, I made plain paper copies of the old photocopy and, more recently, scanned the image into our computer using a Mustek three pass colour scanner. The only change I made in the electronic version, is the writing at the top right. The quality of the sketch has not held up that well, but I am pleased to have a record of the picture I drew. A few years ago I attempted to draw another "Jimi" using the photocopy as my "model" but I just wasn't happy with the result - I couldn't recapture that cheeky expression I think I managed to capture in the original (well, it was much more obvious in the original sketch and I'm afraid this image does not do it justice). Moral of the story - if you have done something you are proud of, make sure you keep it safe and make multiple copies of it!
