Ate defined :  Female sibling older than you are.  How come they become my ate?  Well.. Filipino culture shows respect to any people older or senior than them, not only in relatives but also on strangers.  As you may realize in chatting, we Filipinos tend to ask how old are you and what's your gender, if you're a male and not too old for him, he/she might call you "pare" meaning male-buddy, "mare" for the female, if you're an older male, we tend to call you "kuya" and "ATE" for the females.  On non-relative, we tend to use "boss" or anything that indicates seniority.

They say "The eyes tells who you are!".. then.. who are they???
