Jia-Huei Liao graduated from the Master of Information Systems (MIS) program at the H. John Heinz III School of Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA in 1999. He was interested in information security, object-oriented software analysis and design, database design and management as well as telecommunications management.

Liao has strong communication, leadership and analytical ability. In 1988, he was admitted to the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Chung-Hsing University (NCHU) in Taiwan. He was the Prsident of Entertainment and Service Club when he was a sophomore and junior. He recruited new members, managed strategic planning of all activities, delegated duties, solved problems and funded projects. Under his leadship, the club was named the "Excellent Performance Student Club" by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan. Within the academic area, he received a "Ching-O Medal"--- Academic Excellence Award in Jan., 1991, and when he was about to graduate, he received an "Honor Student Award" for the 1992 Graduation Class, NCHU. He devoted himself to Computer Aided Design, Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS). To gain more knowledge in these areas, he enrolled in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, PA, as a master student in Fall Semester, 1996 and graduated in December, 1997. During this period, he was advised by Dr. Shimada, Kenji as a member of Computer Integrated Engineering Laboratory (CIEL) on automatic unstructured finite element mesh generation (bubble mesh) based on Delaunay Triangulation for triangular and quadrilateral elements mesh. He extended functions in smoothing methods and orthogonal packing (square packing) to get quadrilateral element mesh for the commercial mesh generating software, BMVIEW. (See Research Links.)

In the MIS program, He focused on not only object-oriented software development and database management but also local area networks and telecommuncations. Additionally, He concentrated on information security in the MIS program. He learned not only management and economics of information security but also security architecture, telecommunication security and program security. Applying these knowledge and skills, he can increase qualities of data and prevent information from abused.

Industries have already entered the stage where they demand high quality and efficiency, so it is apparent that in the next couple of years the engineering world will require more people with expertise in computer integrated engineering (CIE). As a result, people who understand Information System Management and CIE will be in great demand. In addition to mechanical engineering knowledge, Jia-Huei Liao is studying information systems and database management to to serve as a bridge between these fields and to a major contribution in both areas.
