A Note on Slow Downloads

Our site is very popular for for downloading demos. This has caused a number of areas on our web site to slow down, especially demo downloads. For your convenience, we've added links to external sites on some of the more larger and more popular demos. Please try these links first.

Downloads are too Big!

Having trouble with huge downloads? One reader recommends Byte Catcher, a utility that lets you resume broken downloads, even after getting disconnected.

Of course, to get a CD-ROM filled with the latest, greatest gaming demos and shareware delivered to your door every month, your best bet is to hang up your modem and subscribe to PC Gamer. :-)

A Plea for Smaller File Sizes

Please! If your company is considering releasing a demo to the public, keep the file sizes manageable. That means under ten megabytes, preferably under five. Bear in mind a ten megabyte demo will take an absurdly long time to download on a 28.8 modem, which is what most of your potential customers will be using to access the Internet. A recent demo (we're not saying which one) had a seven megabyte AVI file in it! This same demo had many more megabytes tied up in 200k WAV files. It is simply not realistic to release this kind of thing onto an already overloaded Internet and expect it to reach a large audience. Use some common sense. Save the thirty megabyte demos for the gaming magazine CDs, and do a separate, leaner version for the Internet.

How do I....?

When you click on a game, many web browsers will tell you there is no viewer available for the item, and ask you if you wish to save the item to disk. Choose yes, and make a note of where you saved the file. When you sign off you need to uncompress the file. If the program is a compressed executable (ending in .EXE) simply move it to it's own directory and run the program, and it will automatically decompress.

If the file ends with a .ZIP extension, you will need to decompress it with a decompression program, such as Pkware's PkZip, for DOS users. Windows users should look at WinZip.

Remember!

When unzipping these games in DOS, use the -d switch on pkunzip to keep the subdirectory trees intact. Also, for those of you who were wondering, the files that end in .EXE are compressed, they've just been made into compressed executables that will automatically uncompress themselves without the use of an unzipping utility.

How long will it take?

The quality of your connection will vary -- start the download and most good browsers and ftp clients will give you an estimate of how long the download will take. If it's going to take too long, try a smaller file.

Another way to determine the amount of time it will take is to use BootNet's handy download calculator. (Please address all download calculator questions to the bootMaster).

Please Note!

Our website does not duplicate the contents of our CD for several reasons. Many of the demos on the CD are upwards of forty or fifty megabytes -- this would take forever for you to download. Secondly, many of them are programmed to run video or audio directly from the CD-ROM drive, so even if you could download them, you would have to burn your own CDs to play them. So, for those reasons, you will not find many of the demos here on our website or anywhere else on the Internet. That's why you should always be sure to pick up the CD-ROM edition of PC Gamer in order to play all of the latest, greatest demos.

For more general information about downloading, see the PC Gamer Online Frequently Asked Questions page.
