bullet Remotely Accessing Your LAN Server Via Internet Using Microsoft Windows

VPN
Remotely accessing the company server can be extremely useful to sales personnel in the field:
  • Lookup a customer contact in the company customer contact database while on the other side of the world--no waiting for overlapping daytime to call or email!
  • Share files directly without having to attach to email.
  • Obtain inventory or pricing information at any time.
  • Update customer contact files.

Prerequisites:

  • server with static IP, i.e., a continuous connection to the Internet with unchanging IP address
  • Windows NT user account, i.e., a logon name and password

Setup on remote computer:

1. The "Primary Network Logon" must be Client for Microsoft Networks.

Open the Control Panel. Double click on the Network icon. Select Client for Microsoft Networks.

2. When Windows starts the logon for Microsoft Networks must appear.

If logon window does not appear when Windows is started delete files with extension .pwl. These are password files.

3. A text file named lmhosts containing your static IP address and server name must be in the c:\windows directory.

Open Notepad. Enter your static IP address in the form nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn followed by spaces (the space between the IP numbers and the server name is not critical) and enter your server name. Save this file to the c:\windows directory with the name lmhosts (don't include a period or extension).

4. Check connection to your server.

Connect to the Internet.
Click on the Start button and the MSDOS Prompt icon to shell out to DOS. Type cd\windows [Enter] to change to the windows directory.
Type ping myserver [Enter]. Where myserver is your server name as entered in lmhosts. You should get a response back that indicates you have connected with your server.

5. Mount remote drives from your server.

E.g., Type net use s: \\myserver\share [Enter]. Where myserver is your server name and share is the directory you want to access. This will create a drive S on the remote computer that is the share directory on the server.
Use this same technique to access other directories on the server.
Type exit [Enter] to return to Windows.

6. Create a shortcut icon for each drive mounted on the remote computer desktop for easy access.
