Connection Software

TCP and Open Transport

Mac TCP is the system software many people use to connect to the Internet, using classic networking.
Download a patch that updates a version of MacTCP you may already have. This file (105K) has patches that will update almost any version of MacTCP you already have.
Secret Tip: Download a copy of Enhanced Cu-SeeMe 2.0 demo from their web site, (read their instructions first) and choose custom install to install MacTCP 2.06, Free of Charge!!
Mac TCP Watcher 2.0 (360K) this application allows you to find out your IP address, and includes other useful features to monitor your network connection. It can also change an IP address into a web address.
An alternative to MacTCP and the latest technology is Open Transport which is included with Apple's newest system software, available here. The newest version, Open Transport 1.1.2 is also available. Open Transport has enhancements which increases speed of connection on some computers. You can switch back to classic networking from Open Transport by using the "Network Software Selector" in the Apple Extras folder.

PPP (Point to Point Protocol)

FreePPP 2.5v3 (705K) this is the best choice for PPP software out there if you aren't using OT/PPP. It includes FreePPP Menu 1.5 and many improvements over previous versions.
PPP Menu 2.03 (144K) this control panel gives you a button in your menu bar to open and close your PPP account and can also launch Internet Applications. This utility supports both FreePPP and OT/PPP.

OT/PPP Strip 1.0 (56K) this control strip module allows you to open and close your PPP connection, indicates your connection speed and time on-line. It requires Open Transport to run.
MacPPP 2.53 (129K) this control panel / extension is Apple's Internet Connection software for the Internet. This version fixes problems with connection scripts and Internet Service Providers. You need Disk Copy 6.12 (457K) to extract this file after you download it.
PPPremiere 1.33 (96K) and OT/PPPremiere 1.33 (128K) keep track of your hours on-line. It also has a nice graphical interface.

Web Browsers

Download Netscape 3.01 now, the best browser out there.
Cyberdog 2.0 (PPC) (3668K) and 68K (3734K) -- Apple's newest web browser that uses Open Doc Technology. It gets mail, news, has embedded pictures, movies, and more, check it out. You need Open Doc 1.2 to use Cyberdog and CFM 4.0 if you have a 68K mac.
PointCast 1.0.1 (PPC) (3701K) -- A truly unique internet application that delivers you all the news you want, stock prices, sports scores, horoscopes, loto numbers, a web browser and a great user interface. Best of all it's all customized to your needs.
While you're here, try out Netscape Defrost 0.9b2 (11K) to possibly help keep Netscape or other Internet applications from crashing on a PPP connection.
Check out Netscape's Plugins page to extend Netscape's capabilities.
PlugMaster 1.64 (138K) this small applcation allows you to disable-enable your different Netscape plug-ins.
Cookie Cutter 1.0 this small application allows you to specify which cookie files you want automatically removed, everytime this application starts up.
Cookie Monster 1.51 (10K) this small application eats all those magic cookies that hide in your system from internet sites, which can invade your privacy. They could track search words you used in a search site, for example.

Internet Relay Chat

There are many choices of software for IRC (for connecting to online chat rooms all over the world). The first and probably the most reliable is Ircle 2.5 (434K).
Homer 0.94 (869K) , has a good graphic interface and easier to use than Ircle.
Netscape's Chat 2.0 with many useful features, and seems easier to use than many other IRC programs.
The Palace 2.2 (3712K) is a graphically rich chat program which will connect to any Palace server. It is a maze of virtual chat rooms, which you can see right in front of you!

Emailer Applications

Eudora 3.1 lite (2082K) is the standard in Internet mail, plus it is freeware. It's the best choice for an e-mail client out there.
If you are looking for something different look at Claris Emailer 1.1v3 (3498K) which is now free!
There is also Eudora 1.55 lite (664K) if there is some strange reason why you don't want the other version.
Macintosh Strong Cryptographic Software is a great site for encryption software including Mac Pretty Good Privacy for e-mail encryption.

FTP Software

FTP "File Transfer Protocol" is for downloading files and software off the Internet, through ftp servers.
Anarchie 2.01 (792K) is another great ftp program out there. It can search servers for a piece of software and includes Internet Config 1.3 (120K).
Download Deputy 1.65 PPC (934K) and 68K (733K) this program will download files while your off doing other things. It will even shut down your computer when it's done.
Fetch 3.03 (966K) is the easiest ftp client to use and includes the ability to resume a broken download. It also includes Internet Config 1.3 (120K) with it. Internet Config allows you to set the preferences of many applications, via this one program.
Net Finder 1.13 (1248K) is an easy to use FTP client with a MacOS finder look to it. This program can also resume a broken download, as can Fetch.

Telnet Software

Telnet's main purpose is for connecting to mail and chat servers. Anyone who has a mail account through a University or other location can probably use Telnet to check their e-mail from home. Another purpose of Telnet is to connect to M.U.D.S (Multi-User-Domains) in which you walk around in a text-based world with other users with the same sort of interests.
Download Telnet 2.7b4 (335K) and check it out. I also found Telnet 2.7b5 (364K) out there even though I thought it's funding stopped. (You might need to hold down the option key when downloading, then drag it on Stuffit Expander 4.01 (267K) to decode.)
If you have problems with any other versions try Telnet 2.6 (235K).
Nifty Telnet 1.1 (254K) is the newest Telnet client out there and it's OpenTransport native.

BBS Software

First Class 3.5 (2898K)  and 3.51 Update (512K) is the best BBS (Bulletin Board System) software, for the macintosh. You can do things such as online conferences or classrooms (I personally know someone who took a class using First Class). You can connect directly to long distance servers, for private downloads, etc.....

Talk Software

Talk is a piece of software for connecting to other users online for a private chat on a split screen. Try it out, Talk 1.1.1 (80K). Two pieces of software come with it ,'talk' and 'talkd.' When 'talkd' is running it will tell you if anyone is trying to contact you, while you are on-line. Connections are made by typing in a users e-mail account and then the user typing in yours. You may want to use Mac TCP Watcher 2.0 (360K) to determine your IP address first.

Internet Phone Software

The only Internet Phone Software I tested for the Macintosh is Internet Phone 3.1 (1313K) for PowerMacs or a 68K version (1245K). You can use this software to talk to anyone on the Internet, who has compatible software, or you can join online chat rooms, with a variety of topics.
CU-SeeMe 0.87b1 For PowerMac (554K) or 68K Macs (426K) (You might have to drag these binary archives onto Stuffit Expander 4.01 (267K) to decode them.) This software is for video-conferencing. You can talk to other users and see them at the same time, provided you have the video equipment, and a reasonably fast connection.
Also try enhanced CU-SeeMe 2.0 demo, download it from their site. See MacTCP tips above!

Finger Software

Finger is for getting information on an Internet user or server by typing in a user's e-mail address or a server's address. Finger 1.5 (92K) is what you need to get access to this information.

News Reader Software

After Dark Online 1.07 (3263K) this online news reader / screen saver is the newest version of After Dark 4.0, for free. It also includes an ability to download Online magazines, including ZD Net, Sports Illustrated, USA Today, and stocks.
This software is for connecting to NewsGroups all over the world on any topic you can think of. Newswatcher 2.1.6 (647K) is the original news software for connecting to newsgroups all over the world.
Yet-Another NewsWatcher 2.4 (1573K) is a more feature packed version of Newswatcher.

Gopher Software

Gopher is much like FTP but its layout is different. You can connect to gopher servers to retrieve information and software. TurboGopher 2.03 (304K) is the best gopher client out there. Try it out.

Weather Software

You can use WeatherTracker 2.25 (828K) to find out what the weather is like in most places around the world. You can get weather forecasts and other information as well.
Another piece of software is Blue Skies 1.1, which uses gopher servers to get access to satellite photos and other weather related information. Here is the PowerMac Version (264K) or the 68K version (251K). Also try out Blue Skies 2.0b13 FAT (700K) (compatible with PowerMacs and 68K Macs).

Wais Software

MacWais 1.29 (402K) is the best application to search wais servers, out there. You can use it to search library records and many other things. I'm not too sure what else it does, since I've never really used it.

Time Software

Network Time 2.01 (209K) this control panel allows you to set your menubar clock to the exact time it really is. Just set your time zone and specify a server, try "bitsy.mit.edu" or "clock.isc.org". It can be put into the control panels folder only if you want it to set the time automatically.
Vremya 1.62 (42K) this application sets your clock to the correct time, quickly and easily. It requires an Internet Connection to work.

Terminal Programs

Mac Kermit 0.991(190) (475K) this program allows you to connect to an internet server through a terminal window. This is useful to connect to old servers that only support terminal programs. I use it to check my MCI account balance.
