Extensions, Control Panels, and System Utilities

 Aaron 1.61 (218K) this extension gives your Mac the Tempo User Interface (System 8). It gives everything a 3D look and adds few useful enhancements. Also Check out Kaleidoscope.

 Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 (6334K) this software package contains everything you need to view pdf (portable document format) files. Pdf documents are useful if you want to make a document and send it to someone else, while retaining the exact fonts and look it was meant to have. This package also includes Adobe Type Manager 4.0 which allows your system to print and display anti-aliased fonts, which is worth the download!

After Dark Online 2.0 (3847K) this online news reader / screen saver is the newest version of After Dark 4.0, for free. It also includes an ability to download Online magazines, including ZD Net, Sports Illustrated, USA Today, and stocks.

Apple Easter Eggs 1.4 (387K) this manual guides you through all the hidden secrets your system has to offer, AKA "Easter Eggs". Try dragging the text "secret about box" out of a text editor, onto your desktop (highlight it first) to get a taste of what wonders you can find.

Audio Strip GH 1.33 (231K) this control strip module allows you to eject CD's, play, pause, stop and select audio tracks on audio CD's with just one button on your control strip.

Auto Menus Pro 3.23 PPC (283K) or 68K (279K) this control panel drops down your menus automatically without holding down the mouse or clicking. Warning: If you use this program ,too long you might forget how to work your mouse.

AVI to QT Kit (217K) this small collection of extensions and an application, allows you to watch AVI movies, using Quicktime Technology. It includes AVI to QT utility and the Intel Raw Video, Indeo Video and windows compressors extensions.

 Behierarchic 3.1b9 (109K) this control panel replaces Apple's "Apple menu options" control panel. It gives you a lot of enhancements and options not available in "apple menu options".

BombShelter 1.01 (8K) this system extension helps keep your computer from crashing. Instead of a dialogue box with only the restart button, there is also a resume button so you can save your unsaved work before you restart it yourself. Warning, if you use this, don't hit resume unless you HAVE to, then restart the computer!

Burn 2.4 (117K) this drag and drop application will permanently remove any "Top Secret" files you may have on you computer, by renaming and overwriting the file with ones and zeros before deleting it.

CD Menu 1.32 (55K) This small control panel allows you to control your music CD's easily with a menu on the right side of your menubar.

Color Switch Pro 1.0 (895K) This control panel competes with Apple's control strip control pannel by giving you access to many of the same features, in a handy icon in the menubar. It includes with it many modules, including: audio volume, displays (resolution and colors), auidio CD control and shortcuts.

Copy Paste 3.31a (390K) This useful extension allows you to have 10 clipboards instead of only one. All you have to do is choose which clipboard you want to use under the edit menu.

Decor 3.03 (663K) This application / extension allows you to put a picture as your desktop instead of a pattern. The only problem is finding a picture to cover the entire screen, check out the programers home page, he has tons.

Default Folder 2.71 (294K) This control panel makes the open / save dialog boxes much easier. It gives you access to your last used folders, and allows you to customize which folders it displays for each application.

Desktop Textures Suit 2.1 (1159K) This application allows you to install any kind of pattern on your desktop. It includes tons of patterns, and allows you to make your own collections. It can open any res-edit files with patterns stored in them.

Dimmer 1.0 (6K) This control panel is the smallest screensaver in the world. It allows you to dim your screen as dark as you want, when you want and only takes up 1K of RAM. (what a deal!) I personally use it.

Disinfectant 3.6 (232K) This application/extension is a free antivirus utility to keep you free from all the nasty things a virus can do to your computer. Alternatives are commercial products such as SAM and Virex.

Discolour 1.02 (41K) This extension from Ambrosia inc. makes your boring black and white disk icon a little more interesting.

Disklosure 1.32 (73K) this small application allows you to quickly and easily initialize disks or erase their catalog files. Useful if you have many disks to initialize.

Disk Surveyor 1.3 (219K) This application shows you what's taking up all the space on your hard drive. I threw away 150MB of movies and music that was taking up way too much room.

Disk Wizard 2.0 (283K) this application/extension catalogs all your disks automatically, so you can find files in your software library, easily.

Double Scroll 2.12 (142K) this control pannel gives you two arrows at each end of the finders scroll bar. Some people might find this function useful.

Eclipse 3.02 (765K) This screensaver-application from Ambrosia Inc. is very system friendly and is a good choice if your shopping for a nice configurable screensaver. You can have a picture of your kids or a company logo dancing across your screen.

 Eject Disk 2.1 (117K) this control panel sets any key to eject and put away any disk, CD-ROM or any other removable disk in your drives. It's useful if you have a lot of windows open, and easier than dragging it to the trash.

Eject Me Not 1.0 (178K) this extension keeps a user from using the Eject Disk command under the Special menu, to eliminate "ghost disks" which can cause many problems for network administrators.

 File Buddy 4.03 (406K) this application does many useful things on your system, including: finds invisible items, finds duplicate files, extends get info, restarts the finder, rebuilds the desktop, finds files, and many others.

Finder Heap Fix 1.01 (2K) this small application allows you to increases the finders memory partition (if you need to), which can prevent many crashes found under System 7.5.5.

Font Clerk 6.2 (464K) this handy application displays information on all your fonts, displays special keys, and converts fonts to and from Microsoft Windows format.

Gauge Series (177K) this package includes 5 useful applications: Cache-22 v1.41 - tells you your CPU type and Cache 1 & 2 sizes. Clockometer v1.96 - tells you your CPU type & speed and Bus speed. RAMometer v1.22 - tells you how much RAM you have and tests the memory not currently in use. SCSI Info v1.0a3 - tells you the SCSI numbers of the SCSI devices attached to you computer. Slot Info v1.0a2 - tells you what versions of ROMs are on cards in you computer and what Motherboard-based video controller is in your Mac.

Get More Info 1.5 (45K) this extension extends the capabilities of the get info command, under the file menu. You can change a files creator and type, as well as invisibility and other things.

 Glidel 3.42 (39K) this extension allows you to drag items into menus for drag and drop launching. I use it to open documents and pictures with an alias of an application in the apple menu or to drag items to the applications menu.

Go Mac 1.1 (104K) this control panel gives you a program bar at the bottom of your screen, similar to the one found in Windows 95. It has a handy "Start" button which can come in useful.

Hidden Finder Features 1.03 (5K) the control panel allows you to enable parts of the finder that weren't used before, such as control drag to make an alias, command delete to move selected items to the trash and command R to reveal an alias.

InformInit 1.3 (489K) this is a guide to almost everything about your MacOS system, extensions, control panels, and which ones you need to keep. You can cut your RAM consumption considerably by reading this after installing the latest system software. This guide is very comprehensive and can answer all your questions you may have.

Internet Config 1.3 (120K) this application/extension allows you to set preferences of many Internet applications via this application, in one step.

 Kaleidoscope 1.51 (619K) This control panel, from the makers of Aaron, lets you spice up your Macintosh user interface even more! It includes everything that came with Aaron but let's you decide what you want your Mac to look like. Hundreds of schemes are now found on-line.(Don't use Aaron and Kaleidoscope together)

LibMotoSh 1.0 this Power Macintosh Extension by Motorola speeds up your math processor up to 4 times, check it out.

MacOs Purge 1.01 (8K) This extremely small application purges any old or unused blocks of memory (without restarting), so you have more for applications, and it usually works.

Menu Tasking Enabler 1.0 (6K) this extension prevents your processor from stopping when you select a menu. This is a must with Netscape, because it prevents losing a download because you were messing around in the menus.

Network Time 2.01 (209K) this control panel allows you to set your menubar clock to the exact time it really is. Just set your time zone and specify a server, try "bitsy.mit.edu" or "clock.isc.org". It can be put into the control panels folder only if you want it to set the time automatically.

Now Startup Manager 7.5 (881K) this commercial control panel / extension replaces Apple's extension manager, with some useful enhancements. It is free for a limited time only, so download and give it a test drive.

OT/PPP Strip 1.0 (56K) this control strip module allows you to open and close your PPP connection, indicates your connection speed and time on-line. It requires Open Transport to run.

Pop Char Lite 2.72 (81K) this control panel puts a popup font window in your menu. It displays all the possible hidden keys such as ©®, for whatever font you have selected at the time, and it even works on HTML documents!

Power Windows 1.21 (76K) this extension allows you to drag filled windows compared to the usual dotted line ones. I don't recommend using the Translucent Power Windows unless you have a very fast computer.

PPP Menu 2.03 (144K) this control panel gives you a button in your menu bar to open and close your PPP account and can also launch Internet Applications. This utility supports both FreePPP and OT/PPP.

RAM Charger 3.01 Demo (713K) this commercial control panel manages your memory giving you more available for applications. It also reduces out of memory errors.

Smooth Windows 1.2 (121K) this control panel gives you translucent windows, and allows you to adjust the degree of translucency. This program is an alternative to Power Windows, but watch out, they can both slow your computer down.

 SnapzPro 1.01 (875K) the best screen capture utility out there . It can capture the screen any time during startup, a game or anything! It also saves the picture in a convenient folder and gives it the file type of your favorite image editor. This new version allows you to select part of the screen, a window etc...

Snitch 2.11 (348K) this control panel allows you to change about anything with a file: it's creator, type, invisibility and many others. It's a lot like "Get More Info" but has more options. It uses a lot of RAM though.

Software FPU 3.04 (366K) this control panel makes your computer think it had a FPU even if it doesn't, it's also useful for people who get errors like Floating Coprocessor Unit not installed, even if they have one. The FPU is used in many applications such as ones involving complex math computations.

Symboints 2.7 (180K) this extension/control panel combination replaces Apple's extension manager control panel and EM extension. It has vast improvements over Extension Manager, such as font management, ram use information on everything, and many others. This program is a must.

TechTool 1.1.4 (547K) this application does 3 very useful things, which help prevent system problems. It rebuilds your desktop without remembering any complicated key combinations, it zaps your PRAM which stores your mouse speed..etc.,and sometimes some nasty bugs, and finally it analyzes your system and tells you what you have. This version is compatible with System 7.6.1.

Turbo Find 2.22 (357K) this application can find any file on your computer by searching through text in files, not just the files name.

Ultra Find 2.52 (505K) this application can find any file, faster than any other search program you have ever used.

WDEF Leopard 1.23 (16K) this control panel prevents several system crashes on your Mac. Programmers may have marked several resources in applications purgable, and this application simply marks them non-purgable and prevents your computer from crashing.

Window Monkey 1.1.1 (527K) this control panel changes the background in each of the finders windows, to any background you want. It also has a small icon in the menu bar that allows you to switch between open windows.
