here i go. i'm taking my soapbox and trying to give you guys a few suggestions. i'll hand you the essentials in my book and might even tell you why. for a lot of the artists i only only included the absolute essentials even though they have other ultrafabulous works. so...you think i need to hear a suggestion? soul murder - extraordinarily unique acid music. jazz, spoken word, electronic, other... fun with musical texture. this disc really does take you everywhere.
tori amos:
blues skies remixes - her ethereal voice and cool fucking music. really cool.
the amps:
pacer - fuzzy summer potrock from the breeders' dominatrix kim deal.
aphex twin:
richard d. james album - immersive. aphex wields his drums and basses as trance. really damn good. my favorite aphex.
selected ambient works volume II - beautiful and creepy in the best possible way.

mutations - this album is damn cool too. it's really catchy without trying to be.

post - the bjork essential i think. i swear she's the bowie of the nineties.

kind of blue - you don't need valium to enjoy this masterpiece but it really doesn't hurt.

violator - good sunday music if you haven't slept in like 72 hours or so.

endtroducing - deep, deep hiphop groove and heavy on the atmosphere
dj spooky:
songs of a dead dreamer - if david lynch were a dj. listen to this at night in savannah during the summer.
dubtribe sound system:
bryant street - amazingly positive, upbeat house with an almost tropical feel.

dreamlands - this is an amazing cd. beautifully emotional trance. good morning recovery music.
mogwai:
kicking a dead pig / fear satan remixes - mogwai songs remixed. really cool.
young team - they're kind of like tranced out sonic youth with a strong sense of climax.
thelonius monk:
thelonius monk with john coltrane - good piano and good sax.
the moog cookbook:
the moog cookbook - your favorite rock songs on synthesizer. how can you go wrong? black hole sun, smells like teen spirit and rocking in the free world are a several

this is a series of themed lounge music cds. how can it be bad when the first in the series has a feaux leopard skin cover. viva velour.
organs in orbit - this ultra-lounge cd focuses on hammonds and other organs and is the epitome of suave. fabulous.

pure guava - this cd is so cool. wierd acidy / drinking music.
josh wink:
herehear - trancy. kind of minimal. very good techno. he's a smooth dj.

that's the end. i could have thrown in a lot more but i didn't fucking feel like it. i think if i were stuck on a desert island with electricity and a stereo with these cds i'd be happy...unless, of course, i was stuck there with the members of matchbox 20 or the cast of step by step...
