Unlike real-time strategy games, which are mostly combat-oriented, this extraordinary turn-based strategic simulation covers all aspects of knowledge that a country leader should have: politics, diplomacy and spying, science and technology, exploration, warfare, economy, entertainment...

The game-player's goal is to build the strongest civilization - by conquering all other or simply by becoming sufficiently advanced to build a spaceship and colonize other worlds. Player decides by himself how he will achieve that goal, meaning that he chooses the type of government (despotism, monarchy, democracy...), his aggressiveness (whether his civilization would live peacefully with other, maybe even ally with one or try to get rid of them as soon as possible)...

The player usually starts building his civilization in year 4000 B.C. and can continue to improve it up to year 2000 A.D. and more. Of course, the sooner player gets rid of his/her opponents, the better score he/she gets at the end. Needless to say, the year of victory is not alone important to final score. Number of inhabitants, civilization advances (such as technology and wonders, for example Statue of Liberty and Eiffel Tower are wonders), state of peace, pollution, city improvements, barbarian or guerrilla uprising - all that effects final score too.

If you want to try out the game, click here to go to the download page to get the demo and check out other Civilization II related downloads. Before that, you can have a look at some selected screenshots, listen to a few sounds from the game. If you already own the game (the full version) and want to get started with it, click here for tutorial. Also, go to tutorial if you've played the game before but really didn't quite get the hang of it (meaning you got low score).

If you know how to play the game, but want to further improve your gameplay, check out the strategy page and links to other useful Civilization II resources on the 'net.
