Holnam Inc. Dundee ,MI March 98 - till date

Environment : Oracle7.3.4.0, HP900, HP UNIX 10.20, Cool Gen/Composer, OEM.

Project Summary : Holnam Inc. is the largest cement manufacturer in the United States. Holnam has a nationwide presence in the U.S. cement industry with 15 manufacturing facilities and over 70 distribution terminals. The hardware setup here comprises five HP9000 Unix servers with 4 CPUs and 2 GB of RAM. These servers work with EMC's Symmetrix Enterprise Storage System with a disk array of 400 GB. The servers also work with HP's Service Guard to provide failover capability. Also we have setups with Novell NetWare , Windows NT, Windows95 & Windows 98. There are in all 30 databases created and running on Unix & Windows NT servers. And 30 more are planned to be created. Also I have been exposed to other software such as Unison's scheduler MAESTRO, Discoverer, Novell GroupWise, Cool Gen.

Contribution As DBA : During my tenure with Holnam Inc., I was involved in different DBA activities supporting databases with different responsibilities. I have created 16 new databases for development, test and production.

Two production databases (DBIEFD & DBIEFDIR) were created as a part of migration of a case tool repository for Cool Gen from Window's NT to Unix.

I carried out all responsibility of DBA from development to production roll out of a data mart application for POS(Production operation statistics). For this project I had created 3 databases each for development, test and production. The application was designed to populate a datamart from a legacy database.

One of the other projects I worked for was DIM(Data integration management) for migration of data from one model to another as a part of integration. The responsibilities for this project was developing, testing and implementing PL/SQL scripts to extract and load data. Some other scripts developed were to compare the data model & schemas.

I was a DBA for implementation project of a third party software LDMS(Lab Data Management System) and ICMS(Instrumentation Calibration Management System). The responsibilities included supporting the test databases, tuning suggestions to improve performance, designing and implementing production databases at 14 different sites.

I had carried out successful upgrade of Oracle from 7.2.0.0 to 7.3.4.2.0 for 24 databases including the production databases.

Besides this I had developed scripts to monitor and manage databases. I had designed and implemented backups strategies for various application. I was also involved in creating and managing end user layer for the end user computing tool Discoverer. Also I had written some PL/SQL scripts to populate forecasting datawarehouse tables.

Worked on a advanced replication project for logistic management. Replication environment was a single master site and a single updateable snapshot site with asynchronous data propagation. Created read only snapshots, updateable snapshots, snapshot groups. I have setup the replication environment for master site and a updateable snapshot site. Also administered the replicated environment.

SERMON for Central Excise, Ministry of Finance, India March 96 - March 98

Environment : Oracle7.0, Developer 2000, Designer 2000, HP Unix

Project summary : Central Excise is a department under Ministry of Finance. Central Excise is involved in collection of tax under the indirect taxation and has offices all over India at around 35 places. The information Systems division has an array of hardware with Pentium clients, GIST Multilingual Terminals, HP Unix, ORACLE, Windows 3.1, Windows 95. There are ten Pentium servers at four different locations. All the servers are linked together through VSAT links or leased lines. There are in all 15 databases created and running on UNIX servers. SERMON is the application developed in ORACLE and caters to the automation of assessment activities of central excise.

Contribution As DBA :

I was involved in creating three databases of which, one is a Test database(TSRM) and the other is a Production database (SRMN) on Revenue collection at the division. The other databases are a production database(NIC) on Revenue consolidation at commissionerate. The database named (SRMN) was recreated on other servers using the control file definitions of databases on other servers with the same datafile but on a different servers.

Other activities I was involved in were installation of oracle & applications, Creation of users, allocation of resource and administration privileges, Backup and recovery. Scheduling backup and writing script for backup. Writing database trigger and stored procedures for validation and updation of various summary tables. Written PL/SQL script for reconciliation. PL/SQL optimization was done by working with the developers. I was also involved in tuning the existing databases. Extensively used Export/Import utilities for selective backup, transferring tables between Oracle instances and also for Defragmentation. A small module was developed for electronic transfer of invoices. Used SQLReport for generating reports. A standard format for invoice was decided and the information was called in the format from assesses in ASCII format. These ASCII files were downloaded using SQL*loader into temporary table. A PL/SQL script was developed for validating these entries and validated entries are added to the actual database.

Pendancy Management System, Central Excise , India July 95 - Feb 96

Environment : Oracle7.0, HP Unix

Feasibility study, Implementation Strategy and Design. Coordinated the team as a Team Leader in system study for Pendancy Management System. Design of forms for data entry module with proper validation using trigger in SQL Forms and used SQLReport for generating reports.

Contributions as Oracle Database Administrator :

Installed Oracle 7.0. The major responsibility was installing of the software, creation of tablespaces, rollback segments etc., on-line backup, creation of users and making available the resources to the users such as granting and revoking permissions on Reportwriter, Menu, Forms, taking periodical backup & restoring them when need arises, user interaction and troubleshooting.

Modvat Processing System , Central Excise , India Nov 94 - June 95

Environment : Oracle7.0, HP-UX

Designed, developed and implemented a module for invoices & PLA's which cross verifies the dababase entries at different location. A Pro*C program was written to generate queries from the database and written to a ASCII file. At other end these queries are downloaded using SQL*Loader. A PL/SQL was written to satisfy the queries. Again a Pro*C program was written to store the query results to a ASCII file and is transferred to originating location.

Contributions as an Oracle Database Administrator :

The major functions were installing of the software, creation of tablespace, rollback segments, indexes etc., on-line backup, creation of users and making available the resources to the users taking periodical backup & restoring them when need arises, user interaction and troubleshooting.
