Photodynamic Therapy

During a Grand Rounds at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla on April 4, 2000, Bergein Overhold, M.D., presented excellent results of photodynamic therapy in the treatment of Barrett’s esophagus.

For details, please refer to his journal article:

Overholt, BF; Panjehpour, M; Haydek, JM. Photodynamic therapy for Barrett's esophagus: follow-up in 100 patients
Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, 1999 Jan, 49(1):1-7. (UI: 99087990)

In this article, Dr. Overhold described his results in 100 patients with Barrett’s esophagus, including 13 with superficial esophageal cancer. 75-80% of treated Barrett’s mucosa was converted to normal squamous epithelium. Dysplasia was eliminated in 78 patients. Ten of the 13 malignancies were ablated. Forty-three patients had complete elimination of Barrett’s mucosa. Esophageal strictures occurred in about a third of patients so treated. Use of longer centering ballooms reduced the incidence of strictures.
