An Inside Look

Congregation Ohev Tsedek was founded more than eleven years ago, along with the help of people in the local community, with the goal of providing a center for Torah Judaism in the beautiful Northwest Hills area. It was established at that time, in the bylaws, that there would be no express membership dues, for it was felt by our founders that there should be no financial barriers for Jews to come and worship, and also make use of their synagogue's resources.

It is an important theme in Judaism, and therefore an important component to our synagogue, that all Jews (from the smallest child to the oldest man) have a special individual connection to G-d, no matter their background or social status. It is in that light that Ohev Tsedek is open to everyone regardless of their individual degree of religious observance or previous Jewish affiliations. Our congregants consist of all occupations: professors, students, scientists, professionals, workers, businessmen. Wearing anywhere from the casual to more formal, all come together to pray as one nation.

Over the years, old and new members alike have commented how they immediately found a home at our synagogue. They continue by saying that this feeling is "perpetuated by a uniquely close sense of camaraderie and family due to the commitment, and heart-felt persistent participation, of its members." Comments such as these we take very close-to-heart, as we are always trying to better relate to the needs of each congregant as best we can, for we know each congregant is our greatest asset. Our greatest hope is to provide a vibrant Jewish center where one can feel at home, and contribute in his own way.

It is in this spirit of camaraderie that we at Ohev Tsedek hold Israel as being the heart and soul of the Jewish people and therefore have consistently staunchly supported Israel, its government, and its people through our policies, finances and prayers.

Throughout the years we have hosted rabbis, from all over the U.S. and Israel, highly distinguished in both their secular fields and Torah Yeshiva training. They have provided both a special highlight and spiritual guidance to our High Holiday season services every year. These services are provided at no admission charge.

All our financial resources have thus far been comprised of only free-will tax-deductible contributions from private individuals, which have never been a prerequisite to joining our synagogue, attending lectures or lessons, or attending any service.
