Black History Month

Arts

I am not too sure about what to include in this section
and welcome suggestions from those interested in the area
of arts in the African diaspora. I will try to include
artists and works that are not necessarily "super stars",
or well known works that we hear about all the time. I want
to seek out the soul of our artistic community, and touch
those who are working without the benefit of the "limelight".
"Black History & Classical Music is an introduction to classical composers and musicians

Online Resource Material

Online resources. Now that's what we expect to find online, isn't it?
Well hopefully you won't be dissappointed with the things you find in
this area. As always, feel free to e-mail any suggestions withregard
to any material you might want to see in here.
My online resource section has been fairly static, frankly I've been dissapointed with how little I've managed to get in. Well, now I have found a gem in the form of The Guide to African American Manuscripts in the Collection of the Virginia Historical Society.

The African American Registry is an encyclopedia of Black History online!
I don't intend to challenge their claim to be the largest Black American History web site in the world.
Enjoy!!

Community

Here I would like to include examples of what people are
actively doing to assist the community. We all have lots of
ideas about what should be done to make things better. I
want to point to programs that are in progress, with the
idea that we can follow their example or assist them in
their efforts or link our active program to those already
in existance. If we can't add to the programs, maybe we can
use the services offered, that's after all, what they are
being set up for.

Business

The African American community needs to pay special
attention to supporting and developing a community based
business sense.

Most of us would be surprised at the buying power that
we represent. I don't have the figures but one has
only to look at the mainstream media ads directed at black
people, to get the idea. These ad campaigns can run into the
millions. No one is spending that kind of money to get the patronage
of our people without expecting a very good return?

The time is now, and the means are more available than
ever before to begin networking to create a solid base
for business in our community. We must begin to train
or obtain training for our young people and we must actively
seek out members of our community that have already got
some momentum going and encourage them.

I could go on and on about this matter but that's not
what I'm trying to do right here. I will be saying more on
this subject and in the future I will need your input.
Stay tuned and enjoy the links.

Genealogy

This section is the first major new addition since the nineties.
Genealogy is one area where we can learn many things about our history
as well as the obvious bonus of discovering our ancestors. The internet
has brought us to the point where much of our preliminary research can
be done online.
The internet also brings us the opportunity to meet and exchange data
with distant family members. My family comes from Virginia and Maryland
and I've been able to trace my ggggrandparents Charles Evans b. 1790
and Susan Prior Evans b. 1805. without leaving my computer. I'll admit
I did have their names, but the internet has taken me to a new level
when it comes to finding family members.

Ancestry.com
I'll start with Ancestry.com because it's very difficult to search
on the web without crossing paths with this organization. They come under many
banners as the new reseacher soon finds out. They have many free offerings but
I recommend taking out a subscritpion in the beginning and using the info you
find in your more detailed research. Many of the U.S. census data from 1930
back to 1700 is indexed and searching is daily getting easier and more efficient.

"I am a Nigerian living in Spain where I have just resigned from a three year stint as an organic farmer. I started blogging 18 months ago with the idea of presenting a progressive and feminst perspective of Africa and the African Diaspora. I am interested in seeking out ways to encourage more Africans to blog and creating a community of grassroots African bloggers as a way/space for Africans to exchange ideas and strategies for effecting change in our communities, share experiences and tell our own stories in our own words."

Links

The following links are being inserted in this page
somewhat hastily in the interest of getting SOJOURN up
and running expediently.

The sites, in time will be organized in a more orderly
fashion as the page evolves. For now, I'm including some of

personal homepages, I will need your help to accomplish this

Audio and Podcasts

There will always be more things to see and hear on
the net. I hope I am able to keep up with the changes.
With my limited budget, it should keep me real busy
just trying . One relatively new thing you can use on a small
budget is Podcasting. Check it out, if you haven't
already. Its good fun and it's getting better.

Podcasting has come on the scene and we are really falling behind the times. African American's rich verbal tradition will be well served by this relatively simple form of audio broadcasting. We who have the ability would do well to pool our knowledge and resources to get our young people into podcasting ASAP.

Attention... Please email me or leave a note in my guestbook if you know of any good Afrocentric podcasts. I am very anxious to have more links.

The MPMG Loudspeaker Podcast
Podcast for the african american community. Technology, politics, and everything in between.
Actually Travis Taylor, the Tech-Producer-Webmaster of this site has an exemplary site. He has accomplished what I consider the true spirit of the marketplace. That balance of community and business that is not often achieved these days. His site is informative, easy to navigate and has a place for feedback that inspires user input. I can't wait see er hear what his next podcast is about.

Black Users of Macintosh
The purpose of this site is to highlight how Black people are using Apple computers and software in creative ways and to encourage more Black artists, techies, and students to become Mac users. This site is not podcasting yet but I as a Mac user recommend it just for the info that's available. I believe that even an old Mac is a better value than a new PC. I personally would encourage those with a low budget to go out and get a blue and white G3 or an older G4 power Mac or a number of those if you wanted to train a group of young people with a minimun of hassles and a host of perks, in the form of user friendliness and versatility.
