SUGGESTED READING

For anyone out there who is interested in reading more about these character's or the Golden Age in general... here's some stuff you can check out.

COMIC BOOKS CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET

CAPTAIN AMERICA: SENTINEL OF LIBERTY is a cool comic book about Captain America's past present and future

CAPTAIN AMERICA of course tells stories about Cap in the here and now

AVENGERS likewise has Cap in it

COMIC BOOKS YOU COULD PROBABLY FIND IF YOU TRIED

MARVELS is a masterpiece of a mini-series by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross... you can find a lot of the art on this site in these books

MARVEL UNIVERSE was a cool book about the past of the Marvel Universe, unfortunately it only lasted 2 story arcs, the first features the Invaders vs. Hydra, and the second features the Monster Hunting predicessors of the Fan Four

THE INVADERS was a book in the 70's by Roy Thomas that starred all of Timely's big stars in one (or more) team(s), now the 70's may seem like awhile back, but it can still be found fairly cheap, and there was also a mini-series in 93' so I suggest looking for that

HEROES FOR HIRE had in it the Original Human Torch, though without his powers, and he was CEO of Oracle Inc., Namor's company

THE OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE not only includes Golden Age characters, but covers just about everything you'd want to know about Marvel characters and artifacts

MARVEL HOLIDAY SPEACIAL is one of many Marvel seasonal speacials produced, but I include this one because it's where I get my info for the Bucky profile

CAPTAIN AMERICA has had, aside from his first three of four regular series (Timely, Atlas, Marvel ('69-96), and the Heroes Reborn series), a mini-series retelling his origin by Roger Stern and John Byrne that I haven't seen yet

HUMAN TORCH has also had a rescent mini-series retelling his origin by Roy Thomas that I haven't seen yet

OTHERS? any suggestions?

ACTUAL BOOKS

MARVEL: FIVE FABULOUS DECADES OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST COMICS by Les Daniels, good book about the history of Marvel

MARVEL UNIVERSE also by Les Daniels I believe, ditto on the description

DC COMICS: SIXTY YEARS OF THE WORLD'S FAVORITE SUPER HEROES is obviously not about Marvel, but it's a good book also by Les Daniels

COMIX: A HISTORY OF COMIC BOOKS IN AMERICA is yet another Les Daniels book, though not limited to just Marvel or DC

THE COMIC BOOK HEROES is the "first" (according to the cover) history of Modern Comic Books from the Silver Age to the present. It has a dang cool cover by Travis Charest (I see big things for this guy!)

THE SMITHSONIAN BOOK OF COMIC-BOOK COMICS is a collection of Golden Age characters and stories ranging from Superman to Little Lulu (sounds cool, I'll have to read it)

GOLDEN AGE OF MARVEL COMICS is of course, about what the title says, and it's by Mavel alumni Roy Thomas and Tom Brevoot (haven't read it yet, give me time)

HISTORY OF COMICS by Jim Steranko, is a history of both Marvel and DC by a great Silver Age artist (um, I need to read more books, don't I?)

AND FOR THOSE WITH MORBID TENDENCES

SEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT: THE INFLUENCE OF COMIC BOOKS ON TODAY'S YOUTH was written by Fredric Wertham M.D. in 1954, who appearantly thought comic books were the tools of evil and that they should be burned by the thousands, and thanks to him, they were.

THE WORLD OF FANZINES: A SPEACIAL FORM OF COMMUNICATION was Wertham's last book, published in 1974. By this time he had appearently changed his views somewhat, and seemed to think comic book readers had healthy active imaginations, by this time however, he had lost his influence over American parents and institutions.

a small leagal note: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are all leagal proporties of DC Comics... Namor, Human Torch, Captain America and all other realated characters, comics, and situations, are ,of course, proporties of Marvel Comics... the use of these characters is merely my humble attempt to pay homage to their creators and to raise public awareness of their existence and histories
