You Taught Me

You showed me I knew how to love, though you never shared the feel
And for the way you made me see that what I felt was real
And for the times you spent with me, while stolen from your world
And for the moments lost in thought and emotions in a whirl

You gave to me such subtle things a debt I'll always owe
In may ways the things you gave, are things you'll never know
Even on the day you made your choice and you walked away
You taught me things I needed to know even though I could not say

I learned from you that touch was good and closeness better still
Words and deeds don't always mesh when a heart has found its will
I learned that smiles can hide such pain to to numb your very mind
And that tears are not so bad when you need to look behind

I also learned that friends are lost when you want them to
And no mater what you say they'll do what they will do
That you can not see inside a heart when the walls are closed off tight
And you can not open them even loving with all your might

Do not read these words so deep or look for something more
I really mean I thank you; you helped me see what's in store
The joy and pain are but flip sides of lessons I needed to know
And without your gentle touch, I'd have never seen the show

On the day you get past the block that past intimacy makes you feel
Reach out to me, your friend is here, like I am and always will
I thank you for the way you taught and for just who you are
'Cause in my heart and memory you'll always be a shining star
