The writing quill pen came into use in the 7th century and replaced the "Reed Pen" as the main writing tool until the late 19th century.

All available historic books from that period have been handcopied with quills by monks. Sometimes they had to work for many years on one single book. The act of cutting a pen into a writing pen had developed into a regular form of art which was taught to all novice monks

Like many other famous documents the Declaration of Independence and the American Constitution were both written and signed with a quill pen.

Today ball-points and computer keyboards have replaced feather quills alltogether. But most children are still learning to write with a fountain-pen, an instrument which slightly resembles a writing quill.

This similarity is reflected in the word "Pen" which comes from the Latin word "Penna", meaning quite simply "Feather".
