C R I C K E T __ C O N N E C T I O N S

"Suzumushi" or "Suzumusi" is Japanese for "Buzzer Bug"

and in particular this Meloimorpha japonica cricket:

The first phase of the project involved finding pages

with sound and picture files for the crickets.

The two main sites for these in this project

were "Insect Sound World" for Japanese crickets

and "Singing Insects of North America" for Florida crickets.

The project continued with these instructions

for processing those files for study:

saved as bitmap files using the PrintScreen key and pasted as bitmap files

into one continuous bitmap strip as diagrammed below:

"kogata-koorogi" (Velarifictorus ornatus, "sibasuzu" (Polionemobius micado),

"Matamushi" (Xenogryllus marmoratus),and

"hime-koorogi" (Comidogryllus nipponensis).

STUDENT EVALUATIONS

Science -

I enjoyed listening to the sound of the crickets 
        and I also enjoyed the challenges 
        that were involved with the task.

It was fun because we got to work with the cricket noises.

Fun experimenting/learning

I would like to see the difference in all the cricket songs, 
        it was fun listening to all the songs and the differences, 
        I learned all the different names of the crickets

I learned about other types of crickets and animals

Hands on academics

I learned more about when crickets sleep.

I got to listen to different cricket sounds.

I enjoyed the scientific part of our task was 
        to find the info on crickets from a webpage 




Computer Uses  -

I liked the uses of the computer because I learned all new things 
        about using the computer.

That was cool because it taught some move stuff that I didn't know.

Fun multimedia applications, I would like to use th Internet more 
        as a resource, I'd like to do that

It was fun because I like learning new programs and systems on computers

How to go to different websites easier (search engines)

get online messing around, I learning how to do with it

Playing with wav files.

I got to edit some things.

We got to use a group of computer searches to track down our info.



Math -

The funnest thing I have ever done would have to be trying 
        to cut the chirp down to 1 chirp and then graphing them.

I love math because it is easy and it has to do with numbers,  
        I want to learn more about polynomials,  I learned a lot

Fun!  unconventional applications, using computers in math

It was fun learning how to do a certain thing in a certain order,  
        I learned how to go from one thing to another

There was graphing like stuff.





Japanese Language or culture -

the people who set up the website are the true hard workers 
        of them all, I just enjoyed the setup.

learned about Japanese language in some of the words 
        and how they are pronounced,  also they have 
        a lot of crickets in their culture (horror movies)

That there are many different types (facets) of Japanese cultures

Ya, it was fun.

I experienced only Japanese cricket names.




Other -

I enjoyed every part of the project I encountered during this project.

Science and math put togeher are a good combination 
        because science you use different numbers 
        to see how big somethings are and what some identifies.

I learned the way to spell a lot of the weird names.

About Japanese crickets.

It is hard finding cricket sounds (at home).

Student searches in Spring and Fall 2001 turned up the following sites which make excellent
