Unenlightened

He was in the corner of the room
choking on the past like a cigarette,
...like a trail of smoke from a jet.

Another spiritualist with an 800 number.

A piece of his spit hit my eye
as he said "You have to squint.
The difference is subtle
but I've got a tropical tan on my
astral body. Been bathing in light."

And though I'd heard the tongue of god
was quiet
he spoke in a booming voice
about how enlightened he was;
been blessed by grace and all that.

He was looking for someone
to turn water into wine
and if they couldn't
then they mustn't be divine.

He found no one who could
so he spent the day mostly
casting stones at sinners.

He claimed to be a lightning rod
that conducts messages from above.

He declared,  "With galvanized steel
and purified grit
it takes six earths and a sun
to make a new heaven."

Now at this point
I'm a bit concerned
by all there is
to unlearn.

"Whatever," I respond
"try plugging your pointing finger
in the power outlet slit
'cause I don't know;

...I guess I'm unenlightened."                                         © 1999 by David Bozzi
