Beyond the USA

Gargoyles Found Elsewhere in the World - Gargoyles are not native to the United States. They originated "arguably" around the middle of the twelfe Century in Europe. I have been to a small hanfull of contries outside the US and have enjoyed look at and being humbled by Gothic architecture.

THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND - Cashel - the Rock, St. Patrick's Cathedral; Dublin; Killarney - Muckross Abbey; Wicklow - Glendalough; etc...

I visited Ireland with my family in June of 1980. We drove around and stayed in several B&Bs. I can still remember the smell of peat wherever we went. I didn't take any photos at the time however, my father took lots.

GERMANY - Nuremburg and Munich

Lisa and I went to Germany in 1992. It was one of those trips that I didn't think I would enjoy. Actually I am very glad we went. One of my main focuses was beer (as it would be in England). I, we, drank alot of it. We visited a couple of castles and watched a few glockenspiels (I hope I spelled that right). Mostly we drank beer, ate som GREAT food, and walked around. One not so happy moment was when I pissed off an eight foot tall Bavarian fellow in lederhosen. I thought for a brief moment that I was going to die. I didn't.

ENGLAND - London - Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London; Salisbury - Salisbury Cathedral; Windsor - Windsor Castle, St. George's Chapel; Bath; Wiltshire - Stonehenge;

Eventhough I had an interest in Gothic architecture, I hadn't yet been bitten by the gargoyle. I also wasn't a shutterbug and I didn't take any pictures. Lisa, my wife, did. I have several photos showing some wonderful gothic imagery. There are many wonderful buildings in London with gargoyles (including Big Ben). I hope to go back and capture some.

ITALY - Milan - the Duomo; Venice - St. Mark's Square & Basillica; Florence - the Duomo, the Basilica of St. Maria Novella, Boboli Grdens, Piazza della Signoria, Ponte Vecchio.

Lisa, Anna and I visited Italy along my folks, my sister Jen and some of her friends and my sister Val and her family. This time I was armed with a nice camera, lots of film, however, not enough time. We visited these three cities in five days. I took lots of photos (only one "true" gargoyle though.
