Parents , Aunts, Uncles and Grandparents, Carers, Nannys, we can not forget the importance of reading to our children and the benifits you all will gain . Television does not entice us to use our imagination , it does not allow us the space to envisage things individually or make us patient for the outcome, even the 'play' that comes from t.v. is less inventive .

It is never to early to start reading to our children , while they're still in the womb a Mother ( or a Father in a LOUD voice ) may read to their child, your voice is soothing and will give your baby immediate recognition when born . A baby two hours old may be read to , your voice is soothing , reassuring and caressing to a creature so young ,and from there on in you should READ all the time. Even if it is bedtime stories , a quiet moment together during the day , when your child is upset , sick or hyper. Reading is a way of calming your child , of soothing your child, of spending 'quality' time with your child .

You will encourage them to use their imagination , give 'props' that can be used for play , teach them to entertain themselves, as well as enjoy a quiet cuddly moment together . A child who learns to enjoy reading will never be lonely or bored and will learn words , language skills , spelling , grammer and the power of imagination . Television has its place in the modern world - I to am a mother and enjoy the 'timeout' that t.v. provides . (Although, at a loss of what to do with a new born baby I have read to my children from the day they were born and every day since) -But it is a one dimensional world behind that screen and cannot possibly provide your child with all the benfits that a quiet moment, a comfy chair, and a soothing voice can. Having that adult all to yourself , undivided attention , even the smells and the warmth, these are the things that memories are made of ...
