Prehaps the first of the modern themes writers have been rewriting into fairytales is Feminism. Many of these poked fun at the traditional roles of fairytales by gender reversals. The female "knight in shining armor" rescuing the male "damsel in distress." Humorous and light these tales illustrated how silly traditional roles could be

This is a good resourse on french fairy tales and conte de fée (the literary fairy tale) which was used by the precieuses in the late 17^th century to achieve thier goal to gain more respect and independence for upperclass women.
