Autumn Clearing Mirror

This mirror will be featured
in the 2005 season of
HGTV's "That's Clever!"

This design came out of hand-stretching canvas for my paintings. After working with a few different shear fabrics, I decided on a very light silk gauze. Block printed with leaves in autumn colors, the silk is stretched in front of a layer of branches cut from hardboard panel. The panel is then backed in gold or copper leaf, shown in the mirrors reflection.

A moiré affect is formed from the layer of stretched silk and its reflection in the mirror. A happy accident of the design process, it now represents wind currents and adds to an overall theme of natural movement.
