Photojournalism in View

Photojournalism - "Photographing the decisive moments and capturing in images what cannot be denied in words, thus providing true information" - Web sites identified and selected by M. Rohan Canagasabey, who was a photojournalist for the English Language press of Thailand ; professional name: Michael-Rohan Sabai.

I would argue that the images contained on these web sites provide a comprehensive overview of photojournalism, which will inspire aspiring photojournalists and gain the appreciation of others. In selecting these web sites I do not imply that these are the best examples of photography to be found -though I have attempted to select the best-, but only as examples of the diversity and different approaches to this noble profession. There is a brief description of the contents of the web sites below this listing.

  1. Piet den Blanken's B&W Cuba photos
  2. Black and White art zone's gallery
  3. The Russian Chronicles by Focal Point
  4. Magic Media's Illustrated Photography
  5. The Professionals : Agence France Presse
  6. Tim Biller - a British photojournalist's work
  7. Chess Edwards' Adventure Travel Photography
  8. American Photojournalists' Photo Essays
  9. Michael Schwarz Illustrated - Gallery & Photo Essay
  10. Photojournalism : An Ethical Approach - a book by Paul Lester

(1) Piet den Blanken's black and white photos from Cuba -not an easily accessible country- are truely examples of "capturing the decisive moment", and open a window into life in Cuba.

(2) "Black and White art zone" is a site dedicated to black and white photography, depicting the work of a few photographers. These photos illustrate how simple form and light combine to make excellent photos.

(3) This site illustrates the Photo essays of Focal Point's photographers on a journey through the breadth of Russia. It also has Focal Point's homepage containing the work of other photographers. This includes a photo essay titled Saigon on Wheels by a National Geographic Photographer.

(4) This is Magic Media's web site which includes examples of Carl De Keyser's Eastern European photo essays as well John Vink's work and the latter's bi-monthly documentary magazine titled Themes. The former is a Magnum photographer while the latter is associated to this renowned Paris agency.

(5) France-Presse Online provides images from one of the world's leading photo agencies. Within here are examples of professional photographers' work.

(6) Tim Biller's photographs can be viewed here. He is a practicing British newspaper and television professional photographer and illustrates his approach to photojournalism. His web page also provides links to other (mostly UK) photojournalists web pages.

(7) Chess Edwards' adventure travel photos from such exotic and diverse countries as Nepal, Thailand, Peru and Chile are to be found here. This illustrates another aspect to photojournalism.

(8) The work of American photojournalists are accessible here. They range from a photo essay with almost poetic words to the horrors of the killing fields in Cambodia and thus again show the diversity within this profession.

(9) Michael Schwarz's homepage in the USA provides a photo gallery for other photographers to exhibit there work. As in a physical gallery each "exhibition" has a time span. It also has photo essays on different subjects, one of which is on-going.

(10) The contents of "Photojournalism : An Ethical Approach", written by Paul Lester are summarised here. Also included are reviews praising it, as it is an aspect of photojournalism that is unfortunately too often ignored. This book also relates this to advice and guidence on being a photojournalist. Information on how to purchase this book can be found here.
