Cassatt, Mary . Mother and Child . 1889
The Waiting Room

She rocked the crooked,
crippled child,
embraced the endearments
from her drooling mouth.

I watched my children play,
smile in my direction.

I began
to breathe again.

Two hours later
I walked out of the clinic.

I walked out with my
running children.
