two boys
hunting beetles
in dried-out cowpies
crossing the meadow ~
daisies
kiss her knees
toddler's laugh
dog's tongue
tickling her toes

fat hot day
sun
melting crayons

steep lawn ~
boys without shirts
rolling like barrels
children laughing
the lawn sprinkler chasing itself
round and around
red rubber boots
not a puddle
without ripples
in the cupped hand
of a sleeping child ~
sunlight at rest

the cow pasture ~
not mud
gushing between my toes

puffs of steam ~
warming my hands
on the holstein's nose

cows watching
from just inside the barn-door ~
rain slows down

mist and drizzle
even the hen yard
huddled in misery

in the wheelbarrow
b ou n c i ng
back to the garden

cow pond
one stone skips nine
ripples intersecting

scarecrow ~
prints in the mud
matching his old boots

cow's tongue s t r e t c h i n g for the bucket out of reach
summer dusk ~
cattle leave river
single file

old cow
didn't come home
farmer sighs
