the butcher puts on clean white gloves
a new day begins
daffodil ~
brushing the snow
off its petals
spring meadow
water trickling
under the last patch of snow

heron on the river
holding court
above the drifting mallards

rounded by the river
cobblestones
under the ripples
no rain ~
dry lightening cracks
the sun-baked soil
summer breeze ~
gulls rising
above the garbage
mom's bible
in the passenger's seat ~
driving home

frail bones ~
dusty old mousetrap
in the attic

after the storm ~
crabs in shattered shells
climbing from the debris

the field's apple tree ~
out-living the barbed wire
stapled to its trunk

October sun on my back
echo of axe
splitting wood
