BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Israel T. Stitt and Sally Sherman

Israel T. Stitt was born within a year of the end of George Washington's presidency, on January 19, 1798 in New York state. He was the first of seven children of John Stitt and Nancy Agan. Both of his parents died in 1821 when Israel was about 23 and quite possibly still unmarried.

Sally Sherman was born on March 30, 1803 in Pittstown, Rennselar County, New York. Like her future husband, she was the eldest in a large family. Her parents, Elisha Sherman and Lydia Ann Borden, had eight children.

Israel Stitt and Sally Sherman were married by early 1826, about the time of the opening of the Erie Canal. Israel worked as a farmer. They had six children:

Israel died on August 22, 1854 and was buried in Wellsburg, Pennsylvania.

Sally (Sherman) Stitt long outlived her husband. She died about two months short of her 97th birthday, on January 18, 1901 in Erie County, Pennsylvania. She had lived through the administrations of 22 U.S. presidents, from Thomas Jefferson to William McKinley.

Although their deaths were separated by 47 years, Israel and Sally share a gravestone in Hope Cemetery in Wellsburg.
