Here are some books I think ought to be read by everyone. Why? Because I like them, I like the authors, and I'm biassed beyond belief. So what? It's my page.

• Henry Rollins, The Portable Henry Rollins. Villard Books. ISBN 0-375-75000-2
• Actually, anything by Henry Rollins I love. I've never read anything harsher or more painful, and that's why I love reading anything he does. If you just want a crash course instead of buying all his books, go with this book.
• Michael Turner, Hard Core Logo. Arsenal Pulp Press. ISBN 0-88978-265-2
• The movie prompted me to get the book, and I like them both equally for different reasons. But if you want to read an incredibly simplistic and harsh view on the life of rock bands, check this book out.
• Pierre Burton, Vimy. Penguin Books Canada/McClelland and Steward Book. ISBN 0-14-010439-9
• I'm Canadian, and I'm a WWI buff. This book is perfect for me. Anyone wanting to know exactly what we have achieved and what we can achieve as a nation should pick this book up.
• William Burrill, Naked Eye. Insomniac Press. ISBN 1-895837-31-6
• My mentor. Was this column that made me believe that anyone as cynical as he was could write for the newspapers. So, I'm trying.
• Drew Carey, Dirty Jokes and Beer: Stories of the Unrefined. Hyperion. ISBN 0-7868-8939-X
• One of the funniest books I've read. 'Nuff said.
• Siegfried Sassoon, The War Poems. Faber and Faber Ltd. ISBN 0-571-13015-1
• I'm also a poet, and he is my favourite poet. Actually, one of the few reasons why I still write. So, if you hate my writing, blame him.
• Arthur C. Clarke, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Roc Books. ISBN 0-451-45273-9
• The best science fiction novel that is almost completely different from the movie. If you want to understand the movie, don't read the book. It doesn't explain jack squat, but it still is a fantastic book.
• Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho. Vintage Books. ISBN 0-679-73577-1
• Probably the most frighteningly in-depth look into the mind of a serial killer. No matter how much you hate the main character, you just can't stop reading. What's worse is that there are people out there like this.
• Michael Madsen, Burning in Paradise. Incommunicado Press. ISBN 1-888277-06-8
• Amazing poetry from an actor who is so intense, I can barely stand it. completely takes me to a different mindset, a new way of thinking about writing.
