Paper 3 A Summary/Critique of Two Sources

For this paper, you are to write two summary/critiques. Remember, in summarizing each source, your goal is to understand the authors main points and put them in your own words. In critiquing each source, your goal is to evaluate the authors ideas by determining whether or not they are effective, effectively presented, and/or validand stating whether or not you agree with them.

For each source your introductory sentence should include your paraphrase of the articles thesis statement with the authors name and the articles title. Your next sentence should state the points you intend to make about the articles main ideas (essay map).

Add to each introduction a summary of the main ideas you have paraphrased. Remember to unify the authors main points, leaving out minor details and any repetition. Remember also to put the ideas in a logical order. Use transitional words, phrases, and sentences as you make connections. Quote as little as possible.

Add to each summary a critique of two or three of the authors points. When you critique a point, first restate it very briefly, and then state whether or not you agree with it. After explaining you response to one of the authors points, analyze the authors evidence and reasoning to indicate why you agree or disagree with it. You might base your analysis of each point on one or more of the following questions:

                   Is the information accurate?
Is the information significant?
Has the author interpreted information fairly?
Has the author defined terms carefully?
Does he make personal attacks?
Does he use faulty cause-effect reasoning?
Does he use either/or reasoning?
Does he make problematic generalizations?
Is his evidence adequate to support his point?

In your conclusion for each source, sum up your overall reaction to the validity and/or effectiveness of the authors article, explaining its strengths and weaknesses, and evaluating how well you think it achieves its purpose.

Good luck!
Suggested length for each summary/critique--2-3 pages--depending upon your sources.
